Time30 minutes + hardening
UseHome fragrance, in a wax warmer
ToolsOld pot, pan of simmering water, 1oz candy or wax molds
TextureSolid wax with herbs on top
StorageCool, dry place out of the sun

About This Recipe

I made these wax melts because I'm always looking for ways to bring warmth and comforting smells into the home, especially during the cooler and darker months of the year. They look so pretty with the herbs and flowers sprinkled on, and I was impressed with the way they release their scent when melting down.

Calendula, Lavender & Rosehips

Ingredients

  • 8oz soy wax
  • 0.25oz ginger essential oil
  • 0.25oz cinnamon essential oil
  • 0.25oz orange essential oil
  • Calendula petals
  • Lavender buds
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Dried rosehips

Directions

  1. Sprinkle some of your herbs into the bottom of the molds.
  2. Place the wax in your old pot, then set the pot in a shallow pan of simmering water.
  3. Once the wax has melted, remove it from the heat. Go slow, and don't let it get too hot.
  4. Stir in the essential oils.
  5. Gently pour just a thin layer into your molds and let it harden.
  6. Gently pour the rest of the wax into the molds.
  7. Once this layer begins to turn opaque, sprinkle the rest of your herbs and spices on top.
  8. Let the wax melts fully harden before removing them from the molds.

To Use

  1. Place one melt in a wax warmer.
  2. Turn it on and let the wax melt and release its scent.
  3. When the scent fades, remove the old wax and add a fresh melt.

Notes

  • Timing the herbs: if you sprinkle the top herbs too soon, they'll sink into the middle of the melt instead of sitting on top. Wait until the wax starts to turn opaque.
  • Why wax melts? With an electric wax warmer there's no worry about leaving a flame unattended. They also release an amazing amount of scent, and the herbs and spices look so pretty floating in the warm wax.
  • Molds: small candy molds or wax molds work well (one-ounce molds work best). You can find them at Michaels.
  • Use an old pot: wax is hard to clean out, so keep a pot just for melting wax.
