All Purpose Healing Salve
This is my family's go to healing salve for cuts, scrapes, itchy bug bites, chapped skin, and all those sorts of things.
The first step in making this salve is to make the herbal oil infusion.
¼ cup Calendula
¼ cup Plantain
⅛ cup Lavender
⅛ cup Echinacea
Olive Oil to cover (about 1 1/2 cups)
Slow Method for Herbal Oil Infusion
Measure herbs into a clean pint size mason jar and fill to the top with olive oil. Make sure the herbs are fully covered by the oil and that the oil fills the jar. Put a lid on it and let it infuse in a warm place for 6 weeks. At the end of the six weeks, strain the herbal oil into another clean glass jar with a tight fitting lid.
Quick Method for Herbal Oil Infusion
Measure herbs into a clean pint size mason jar and fill to the top with olive oil. Make sure the herbs are fully covered by the oil and that the oil fills the jar. Next place the jar in a crock pot, fill the crock pot with water so that the jar is half submerged. Heat on low for 48hrs and then strain.
Alternatively you can pour the mason jar and its contents directly into the crock pot and heat on low. But some crock pots get too hot and the herbs simmer or burn even on low, so if you choose this method keep an eye on your oil so it does not overheat.
After gently heating, strain the herbal oil into another clean glass jar with a tight fitting lid.
All Purpose Salve
1 cup of Calendula, Echinacea, Plantain, Lavender Infused Olive Oil
1 tbs Jojoba Oil
1/2 tbs Vitamin E
20 drops Lavender Essential Oil
20 Tea Tree Essential Oil
Before starting your recipe, have your tins or salve containers ready.
- In a double boiler combine the herbal infused oil and beeswax pastilles. Gently melt over low heat, heat until it's just melted.
- Once the beeswax has completely melted, remove from heat. After removing from heat add in the jojoba oil, vit e, and essential oils.
- Stir to combine it all together and then pour into the containers.
- Label your containers with the ingredients and the date.
This recipe makes about 1 cup of salve. Pour into tins or cosmetic glass jars. Salves can last 2-3 years if stored properly in a cool place out of direct sunlight with a lid.
