About This Recipe

There is a reason that roses are the queen of beauty: in her royal plant wisdom she understands exactly what skin needs, and delivers it in the gentlest of ways. This whipped face butter starts with rose infused oil, rich in vitamins C and A and antioxidants, known to help boost collagen, soothe upset skin and balance out acne. Roses are good for all skin types, from sensitive to acne-prone to maturing skin.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Shea Butter (2 oz)
  • 1/4 cup Rose Infused Oil (2 oz) (see Notes)
  • 1/2 tbsp Argan Oil (8 g)
  • 1/2 tbsp Rosehip Oil (8 g)
  • 1/4 tsp Sea Buckthorn Oil
  • 10 drops Rose Absolute Essential Oil (optional)

Directions

  1. Combine the shea butter, rose oil, argan oil, rosehip oil and sea buckthorn oil in a double boiler and heat over low heat until completely melted. Don't add the rose absolute essential oil yet; that comes last.
  2. Place the bowl in the refrigerator to let the oils solidify. Cooling the shea butter quickly keeps it from "blooming" or crystallizing into little beads in your face butter weeks or months later.
  3. Once the mixture begins to solidify, remove it from the fridge. If it's rock hard, let it come to room temperature and soften a bit.
  4. Using a bowl mixer or stick blender, whip until smooth, silky and whipped. This can take a few minutes; just keep whipping and it will turn smooth and creamy.
  5. Once it's well whipped, add the rose absolute essential oil and mix in.
  6. Spoon into clean, dry jars (about three 50 ml jars), label and store.

To Use

  1. Scoop a small amount with clean, dry fingers.
  2. Warm it between your fingertips until it melts.
  3. Gently press and smooth it onto clean skin, morning or night.

Notes

  • Making the rose oil: Rose oil is one part dried organic rose petals steeped in a carrier oil (like apricot oil) for 6 weeks, then strained. Or use the quick method, which gently heats the oil in a crock pot. Here are more detailed directions for making Rose Infused Herbal Oil.
  • New to infusions? Start with the Art of Herbal Infusions guide. It uses rose infused oil as the example but works with many herbs.
  • Choosing petals: Use rose petals that are dried and organic. Mountain Rose Herbs is a good source. If you harvest your own, make sure they haven't been treated or sprayed with anything.
  • Shea beads: Little beads of shea butter are harmless; chilling the melted mix quickly is what prevents them.
  • Storage: Stays fresh for up to a year, but you'll use it up before then. Keep water out of the jar and scoop with clean, dry fingers.
