Homemade Ginger Chews – Make Your Own Natural Remedy

Soothing Homemade Ginger Chews

Many of us know how powerful ginger can be for upset tummies, nausea, bloating, and gas. And anyone who has ever tried a ginger chew knows just how well they work! Unfortunately, they can be hard to find in stores — but the homemade version is even better.

This simple recipe makes a naturally soothing candy you can keep on hand for whenever queasiness strikes. Plus, it’s fun to make and uses ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

What You'll Need

  • 2 ½ cups water
  • ½ cup grated and packed fresh ginger root
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¾ cup cane sugar
  • Candy thermometer
  • Saucepan
  • Parchment paper (unbleached, compostable, chlorine-free)
  • Coconut oil (for greasing)

How to Make Ginger Chews

  1. Step 1 – Simmer: Peel and grate the ginger root. Pack ½ cup into a saucepan and add 2 ½ cups of water. Simmer gently over low heat for 1 hour.
  2. Step 2 – Strain: Strain the liquid into a jar or bowl. Measure out 1 ¼ cups of the ginger liquid and return it to the saucepan.
  3. Step 3 – Add Sweeteners: Stir in the honey and cane sugar. Attach the candy thermometer to the saucepan.
  4. Step 4 – Heat: Heat the mixture slowly over low heat until it reaches 255°F. Do not boil — let it thicken gradually.
  5. Step 5 – Prepare the Mold: While the syrup simmers, grease a 7x4 inch (or similar) glass dish with coconut oil. Line it with parchment paper and grease again.
  6. Step 6 – Pour and Cool: Once it reaches 255°F, pour the syrup into your prepared pan and let it cool completely.
  7. Step 7 – Cut and Shape: After a few hours, use a greased knife or scissors to cut the cooled candy into small squares — or roll into little balls. Greasing your hands and tools with coconut oil helps prevent sticking.
  8. Step 8 – Wrap and Store: Wrap each piece in parchment paper and twist the ends like a candy wrapper. Store in a clean glass jar.
🌿 These chews can last up to a year if stored properly, but they’re most effective when used within a few months.

Helpful Tips

  • Always heat slowly — rushing can cause the mixture to harden incorrectly.
  • Use coconut oil to grease everything — your hands, tools, parchment, and the candy itself.
  • Shape is flexible! Make tiny balls, chunky chews, or classic candy squares — whatever suits your needs.
